Two years into our adventurous journey of full-time travel and worldschooling across Europe in our trusty caravan Suzy, we’ve had the privilege of exploring numerous cultures and sampling various cuisines. Among all the places we’ve visited so far, there’s one that holds a special place in our hearts: Turkey, and we are here again right now!
And in this enchanting country, one of the thighs that has captured our family’s love and admiration for this country is the Turkish breakfast.
Now in the UK, we love a ‘full english’, although it’s safe to say that as a veggie, I don’t partake in as much of the full experience as Ian would, but certainly enough to still love it!
I have especially fond memories, back in the days when kids weren’t in the picture that a greasy fried english breakfast with a cup of ‘builders tea’ from a local back street ‘greasy spoon’ was the perfect recovery from a hangover from hell!
Well the Turkish breakfast couldn’t be more opposite in terms of a breakfast experience (although fried eggs do make an appearance!)
The Cradle of Civilization: A Glimpse into Turkey’s History
Our love affair with Turkish breakfast begins with an exploration of Turkey’s rich history. As we’ve crisscrossed the country, we’ve marveled at the remnants of ancient civilizations that once thrived here. Turkey, often called the “cradle of civilization,” boasts a history that spans thousands of years.
Everywhere you go you can tap into another piece of history that is still there to enjoy, and to be honest we have barely scratched the surface even though we are heading into our 5th month exploring Turkey!
Picture yourself sipping on a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, gazing at the breathtaking landscapes that have witnessed the rise and fall of empires. From the Hittites to the Byzantines, and from the Greeks to the Romans, Turkey’s lands have been a stage for epic tales of power, glory, and conquest.
A Feast for the Senses: The Turkish Breakfast Spread
One of the most delightful ways to connect with Turkey’s storied past is through its breakfast table. Turkish breakfast is not just a meal; it’s a sensory journey. It’s a symphony of flavors, textures, and colors that tickles the taste buds and leaves you longing for more and also leave you with a very full belly!
Imagine sitting at a charming local cafe, a gentle breeze rustling the leaves of the nearby olive trees, or perhaps you are looking out over a beautiful bay with glistening blue waters. The aroma of freshly brewed Turkish tea wafts through the air. You’re suddenly presented with a dazzling array of dishes (that just seen to keep coming!) artfully arranged on a mosaic of plates and platters.
The centerpiece of any Turkish breakfast is the “simit,” a sesame-crusted bread ring often referred to as a “Turkish bagel.” Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and generously coated with sesame seeds, simit is the perfect vessel for the myriad of toppings that await you. Although depending on where you get your turkish breakfast you may also get a basket of mixed breads, flat breads and more.
The turkish breakfast is not a cookie cutter experience, it will vary place to place, but each time, you will leave full and satisfied!
A Culinary Mosaic: Turkish Breakfast Delights
So let’s delve into the heart of a traditional Turkish breakfast and uncover the culinary treasures that await in addition to the bread:
Olives: Turkey is one of the world’s largest producers of olives, and it shows in their breakfast spread. You’ll find an assortment of olives, each with its own unique flavor profile. Green, black, stuffed, marinated – the options are endless.
Cheeses: Turkish cheeses are a revelation. Feta, beyaz peynir (white cheese), and kasar (a mild yellow cheese) are just a few of the varieties you’ll encounter. Pair them with honey or jam for a sweet-savory contrast.
Tomatoes and Cucumbers: Fresh, juicy, and bursting with flavor, tomatoes and cucumbers are the unsung heroes of Turkish breakfast. They add a refreshing element to every bite.
Menemen: This Turkish-style scrambled eggs dish is cooked with tomatoes, green peppers, and a touch of spices. It’s hearty, flavorful, and a must-try.
Sucuk: For the meat lovers, there’s sucuk, a spicy Turkish sausage that brings a fiery kick to the table.
Turkish Tea: No Turkish breakfast is complete without a glass of çay (tea). Served in delicate glasses, sipping this aromatic brew is a time-honored tradition.
Jams and Honey: A delightful assortment of fruit preserves and honey adds a sweet note to your breakfast adventure.
Sometimes we also been given a thick cream, which goes amazing with the honey and also fried potatoes in various formats.Sometimes Börek: flaky pastries filled with cheese, spinach, or minced meat are a true Turkish delight. The layers of dough are as light as air. And at other times sausages.
We’ve also at some places been given pomegranate juice, fresh melon and apples.
And if for some reason you need more, you just ask for more and out it comes!
The best way I can explain it, is to imagine those historical films where you see the romans rucking into a table banquet or that moment in Harry Potter when the tables in the great hall suddenly get filled with food!
It’s 100% a banquet for the senses!
The Heart of Hospitality: Turkish Breakfast Culture
As we’ve traveled through Turkey, we’ve been struck not only by the delicious food but also by the warmth and hospitality of the Turkish people. Breakfast, we’ve learned, is more than just a meal in Turkey; it’s a celebration of life, family, and togetherness.
Turkish hosts take great pride in preparing a bountiful spread for their guests. The act of sharing a meal is a symbol of generosity and friendship. When you sit down for a Turkish breakfast, you’re not just eating; you’re connecting with the culture and the people.
A Bond That Transcends Borders
What makes Turkish breakfast truly special is its ability to transcend language barriers and cultural differences. No matter where you come from, no matter how different your background, there’s something universally comforting about breaking bread together.
As a family on the road, we’ve found that sharing a Turkish breakfast has been a powerful way to connect with locals and fellow travelers alike. We’ve swapped stories, recipes, and laughter over a communal breakfast table, forging friendships that will last a lifetime.
We’ve also met up with fellow worldschoolers for a Turkish breakfast and have forged new friendships over a plate of olives!
The Inspiration of Simplicity: Lessons from Turkish Breakfast
Beyond the delectable flavors and the warm hospitality, Turkish breakfast has taught our family valuable lessons about life on the road and embracing the simple pleasures.
In a world that often seems rushed and chaotic, the unhurried pace of a Turkish breakfast reminds us of the importance of savoring each moment. It’s a reminder that joy can be found in the simplest of pleasures – a warm sip of tea, the laughter of loved ones, and the taste of fresh bread.
Going for a Turkish breakfast is not a rushed affair, it’s an experience. You might have a little bit to eat and then spend time chatting and being together, before having a second sitting, then a third or maybe even a fourth!
Bringing Turkey Home: Our Love Affair Continues
Our love affair with Turkish breakfast isn’t just about food; it’s about the memories we’ve created, the connections we’ve forged, and the inspiration we’ve found in the simplest of moments. It’s a reminder that travel isn’t just about the places you go; it’s about the people you meet and the experiences you share.
So, if you find yourself in Turkey, whether you find yourself in the bustling streets of Istanbul, the tranquil villages of Cappadocia, or somewhere far from the Turkish borders, take a moment to savor the essence of Turkey through its beloved breakfast.
We will definitely be taking this experience with us and I know, even when we are not in Turkey we will still on occasion create our own version of the Turkish breakfast just as we have enjoyed the odd ‘full english’ since leaving England!
You just cannot be in Turkey without experiencing the breakfast even just once and as with all travels, look where the locals go!
Don’t go to the commercialised restaurants, seek out the local hidden gems because that is where you will get the most authentic of experiences!
Enjoy!
